One year later

I can't believe it's been a year, or just two weeks shy of a year, since I started this blog and posted my first entry!

I am another year older but I don't know if I am another year wiser. Much has stayed the same which is good. I am still married to Earl. That makes 26 years! My twin sons, Jeff and Eric, are 29-1/2, and both are wonderful. We talk often and visit when we can.

My stepsons are doing great! Earl III has his own blog. I'll have to find out how to put a link to it here. Leo has one, too. Steven and Prisca are expecting a baby by mid-August. This will be Prisca's fourth child but Steven's first. Earl hopes to be able to see them when he visits Leo in Tennessee next month.

At this time last year, Earl and I were in the middle of a summer class at Las Positas--History 7 or 15, I can't remember but it was California history. Thank goodness it wasn't world history or something like that because these summer sessions are short and intense. This year, I am taking Political Science but we've agreed neither of us will take summer classes any more. Too much to learn in too short a time.

I'm still at my same job. Been there since January 13, 1969.

I guess the biggest change is that I burned out and/or termed out of my library stuff. I gave notice to CALTAC last April that I would be leaving the Board after the Spring workshops were over and fully accounted for. I was in charge of them and they happened this past March. I was also in charge of awards and the awards luncheon, the planning for which began around July and ended this past November. Now, I have so much stuff to send out to the folks who have taken over these jobs. I feel like I need a day off just to pack it all up and get to the post office. I should already have done it.

Last September was my final ACLAC meeting. Termed off after 12 years. Some time last year I stopped attending Friends' meetings and have nothing to do with the group now. This past May, I termed off the BALIS SAB. These acronyms mean nothing to anybody outside of my library world. This October will be my last CLA Assembly meeting. I was elected for a two-year term and did not run for re-election. This past April I did not attend Legislative Day in Sacramento for the first time in at least a dozen years although I did go up for the day to participate in a CLA Assembly meeting. It was great to go up for just one day instead of three. The Board meeting held then was the first one held since I resigned.

Those years of library advocacy, growing library leadership and growing involvement were extremely fulfilling and exciting. It's hard to believe I went through the phase and am on the other side. I got so busy that I got overwhelmed but it sure was fun. I gave speeches, wrote, was president at least twice on CALTAC and ACLAC, met some great movers and shakers...I received the CLA President's Award in 2002 which resulted in recognition by the Alameda Co. Bd. of Supes as well as the Dublin City Council. I was able to work with Linda Wood for many years and then see her retire. What a time!

Speaking of the library world, both Barbara Campbell and Barbara Will died. Barbara Will went just the other day. Barbara C. went a month or so ago. Barbara C. might have been one of the founding members of CALTAC. The last time I saw Barbara Will was over lunch in Sacramento not more than two years ago. What great ladies they were.

I guess this is getting too long to just keep rambling on so I'll try to remember to come back and continue.

Everything has a beginning, yes?

So, I thought I had a blog--ktdyer.blogspot.com but somehow it seemed hooked to a library organization to which I belong so I created a new one which I believe is kdyer.blogspot.com which should be good enough to confuse me. Hmmm, hitting the "enter" key is not creating a new paragraph. What is that?
